Ads have arrived in ChatGPT. That part is real. Almost everything else you'll read about them online is a mix of half-truths, leaked projections, and confident guides describing features that OpenAI has never announced.

I've spent the research time separating the two, because this is a topic where getting it wrong is easy and expensive. If you brief a client or a boss on "ChatGPT ad targeting" that doesn't exist, or reallocate real budget based on a revenue projection someone invented, that's on you.

So here is the sober version. What OpenAI has actually confirmed, what's still rumour, and what a sensible business should do today.

!!!
The TL;DR: OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT on 9 February 2026. They show only to Free and ChatGPT Go users, never to paid tiers, and started in the US before expanding to Europe and India by late August 2026. The format is a labelled "Sponsored" block beneath the answer, targeted by the context of your conversation rather than a Meta-style behavioural profile, and OpenAI says ads do not influence the answer itself. The advertiser side is still maturing: an invite-only pilot opened around April 2026, followed by a US beta self-serve Ads Manager in May, with reported CPMs around $60. Separately, ChatGPT shopping (Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol, built with Stripe) launched in September 2025, though for most merchants the reality today is product discovery in ChatGPT with checkout on your own site. For now, the biggest opportunity for most businesses is not buying ads. It's getting recommended organically through clean product data and third-party authority.

## What is actually confirmed

OpenAI started testing ads in ChatGPT on 9 February 2026, after signalling the plan in January. This was a genuine reversal. Sam Altman had previously called advertising "uniquely unsettling" and something close to a last resort, so the launch came with heavy guardrails and cautious language.

The confirmed facts, from OpenAI and mainstream reporting rather than marketing blogs:

- Ads show only to Free and ChatGPT Go users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education stay ad-free.
- It began in the US, then expanded to Europe and India by late August 2026.
- Ads appear as a clearly labelled, visually separated "Sponsored" block beneath the answer.
- Targeting is contextual and intent-based, drawn from the conversation, and users can turn off personalised ads.
- OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers, no ads are shown to under-18s, and sensitive topics like health, mental health and politics are excluded.

That's the real product as it stands. Notice what isn't on that list: no granular audience targeting, no ads inside the answer text, and no single confirmed catalogue of ad formats beyond the sponsored block.

## How ChatGPT ads actually work

The mental model that fits best is Google's, not Facebook's. OpenAI's applications chief, Fidji Simo, has described the approach as intent-based rather than behavioural. The system reads what you're actually asking about in the moment and matches a relevant sponsored result, instead of building a long-term profile of who you are and following you around.

This is a meaningful distinction for advertisers. It means the lever is relevance to a conversation, not a stack of audience segments you've built. If someone is discussing meal kits or project management software, a related sponsored block can appear. That's closer to search intent than to social prospecting, and it's the same shift I wrote about when AI answers started changing search behaviour in my piece on [what AI Overviews and SGE have actually done to search CTR](/blog/ai-overviews-and-sge-what-they-ve-actually-done-to-google-ads-search-ctr).

One more thing worth saying plainly, because the hype gets this wrong: OpenAI's stated design keeps the ad separate from the answer. Any guide claiming ChatGPT injects paid messages into the response text is describing something OpenAI says it does not do.

## Can you actually buy them yet?

Partly, and only in some places. This is where the online guides overreach most.

Here is the confirmed progression. Around April 2026, OpenAI began an invite-only ads-manager pilot, described by one agency source as "a test within a test," with the minimum spend reportedly lowered to around $50,000. Six weeks in, Reuters reported an annualised run rate of roughly $100 million and a CPM of about $60. In May 2026, a beta self-serve Ads Manager opened to US advertisers, adding cost-per-click alongside CPM, with measurement through a conversions API and pixel and aggregated reporting only. Through the second half of 2026, access has been rolling out by region.

So the honest status is this: US-first, evolving from invite-only toward a self-serve beta, still gated elsewhere. If you see a claim that ChatGPT ads are fully open, self-serve, global, with no minimum, treat it as overstated.

Set expectations accordingly. Reporting is aggregated, closer to connected TV than to the row-by-row detail of Google Ads. Targeting is contextual, not the audience-building you get on Meta. And the CPMs reported so far are high for an unproven channel, which is exactly why you pilot rather than pivot.

## Don't confuse ads with shopping

The most useful ChatGPT commerce feature for many businesses isn't an ad at all. It's agentic commerce, and it launched earlier and is more concrete.

In September 2025, OpenAI and Stripe launched Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard that lets a shopper buy inside ChatGPT while the merchant keeps control of payment, tax and fulfilment. Etsy sellers in the US were first, with Shopify's large merchant base announced to follow.

Then reality intervened. By March 2026, Shopify's integration had shifted from in-chat checkout toward a discovery-plus-click-out model: products are found in ChatGPT, but the purchase completes on the merchant's own storefront. So for most merchants today, the practical setup is discovery in ChatGPT and checkout on your site, with true in-chat purchase live for a narrower set. That distinction matters when you're deciding where to spend effort.

## The bigger opportunity right now: getting recommended without paying

For most businesses, the question that matters isn't "how do I buy ChatGPT ads." It's "why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me." That's an organic problem, and you can work on it today.

ChatGPT surfaces brands through a mix of its training data, its live web search (which draws on Bing's index), and the product catalogues feeding its shopping results. The discipline of influencing that is generative engine optimisation, or GEO, and it behaves differently from classic SEO. AI answers frequently cite sources that aren't Google's top ten, so ranking first on Google does not guarantee you get mentioned in a ChatGPT answer.

What actually seems to drive whether a brand shows up:

- A clear, consistent definition of your brand and what it does across the web, so the model can identify you as an entity.
- Being referenced across many credible third-party sources: reviews, "best of" lists, forums, and reputable media.
- Clean, machine-readable product data with accurate titles, prices, availability, images and reviews.
- Fresh, current public information rather than stale pages.

This is really a brand-visibility problem, and it rewards the same off-site authority that has always mattered, which is a theme I keep returning to in the difference between [brand and performance investment](/blog/brand-vs-performance). The brands that get cited by ChatGPT tend to be the ones other people already talk about.

## What to do today

A practical, no-overpromising checklist:

1. Clean up your product feed and structured data now. Accurate titles, pricing, availability, images, reviews, and schema markup. This single job helps organic ChatGPT shopping visibility today and any paid formats later.
2. Make sure you're eligible for agentic commerce through your platform, for example Shopify's catalogue or an ACP-compatible setup, so you can be discovered even while in-chat checkout is limited.
3. Invest in off-site authority and GEO: third-party mentions, reviews, comparison content, and accurate public information about your brand.
4. Check that your site handles AI-referred visitors well, because ChatGPT web search sends people out to fast, clear product and landing pages.
5. If you're a US advertiser and genuinely want to experiment, request access to the beta Ads Manager and pilot small. Elsewhere, watch for the regional rollout. Don't move core budget into an unproven, high-CPM channel yet.

If you want a sense of how AI tools are already reshaping day-to-day ad work beyond this, I walked through one example in my guide to [connecting Google Ads to Claude with MCP](/blog/how-to-connect-google-ads-to-claude-using-mcp).

## What to be sceptical of

Because this topic attracts invention, here is what I'd treat as unproven until OpenAI says otherwise:

- Tidy taxonomies of "three ChatGPT ad formats." Only the sponsored block beneath answers is confirmed.
- Big revenue figures presented as fact. Projections of billions by 2029 or 2030 are leaked or modelled numbers, not results. The credible figure so far is the roughly $100 million annualised run rate.
- Precise performance stats, such as exact click-through or conversion rates from ChatGPT. Most trace to vendor blogs, not to OpenAI.
- Promises of Meta-style audience targeting. The confirmed model is contextual and intent-based.
- Exact costs quoted to the cent. Reported CPMs cluster around $60, but the detailed pricing you'll see in some guides is not confirmed.

There's also a live trust question. In January 2026, US Senator Ed Markey wrote to OpenAI warning that ads in a conversational interface could exploit users' trust, especially around sensitive topics. Even with a separated, labelled ad block, an ad inside something that feels like impartial advice raises disclosure questions that regulators are watching. That scrutiny is part of why OpenAI is moving cautiously, and it's a reason to expect the rules to keep shifting.

## Bottom line

- Ads in ChatGPT are real but early: testing since February 2026, Free and Go tiers only, US-first and rolling out by region.
- The format is a labelled sponsored block beneath the answer, targeted by conversation context, not a behavioural profile.
- Buying them is still gated and maturing. Pilot if you're a US advertiser with budget to experiment, but don't reallocate core spend.
- Shopping in ChatGPT is a separate, more concrete opportunity, though for most merchants it currently means discovery in ChatGPT and checkout on your own site.
- For nearly everyone, the highest-value work today is organic: clean product data and genuine third-party authority so ChatGPT recommends you at all.

My honest read is that the winners in this next phase won't be the businesses that rush to buy the first ChatGPT ads. They'll be the ones that make themselves easy for ChatGPT to understand and recommend, then layer paid on top once the channel actually proves itself. The ad platform will still be here in a year. The organic groundwork takes longer, so that's where I'd start.

If you want help getting your business ready to show up in ChatGPT, whether organically or through the new ad formats as they open up, that's what my [ChatGPT ads service](/services/chatgpt-ads) is built for.
